Internet is the most recent telecommunication technology,which has brought a technological revolution not only in offices but also in homes. Internet is the world's largest computer network, which connects several computers of different types belonging to various networks all over the world.

Internet is not governed by a single authority. So, there are no official rules and regulations to control activities involving it.  This has many problems being associated with the internet. Individuals or organization use  their computers to store important and valuable data.Very often this data is kept confidential and needs to be stored securely. However, with the internet connecting all these computers, this security is now being threatened.  

INTERNET APPLICATION 

It is not that the Internet is used only for sending and receiving information. It has its commercial aspect too. Internet today offers a number of standardized services to all its users. In fact, it is like a multipurpose tool to communicate with one another, collect information and enhance your knowledge about the subject that you like, conduct research, play games, invest in shares or just look around (usually called browsing) in search of recipes or even jokes or the latest technological developments. The description that follows will acquaint you with some of the well-known ways in which Internet is used worldwide. Some of the important usages of Internet are:


  1. INFORMATION RETRIEVAL 
One of the most commonly used services on the Net comprises retrieval of information about various topics that interest you. This retrieval ( getting ) of information is made possible through the World Wide Web (popularly called WWW or W3).

2.  INTERNET AND E- MAIL 

The Internet facility used to the maximum is E- mail. It involves writing messages on a computer and transmitting them to another computer so that the addressee can read them, thus saving paper, time, energy and cost. In fact, it can be said that E-mail is the essence of all communctions on the Internet. Practically, everyone with Internet access does have an E- mail account. 

3.  NEWSGROUP (USENET)

The Internet provides you a major avenue to communicate with large groups. Popularly, referred to as 'Newsgroups' this service is technically called Usenet and comprises a distributed bulletin board system. The information (news) shared by Usenet groups can be 'unmoderated' (unedited) or 'moderated' (edited).

4.  ACCESSING PEOPLE

Internet would help you in locating your long lost friend, who has probably lost in school or college. That person must have an e-mail account. Rest is easy. For this purpose, you can visit a commonly used website such as whowhere (use your search engine to locate it by typing http://whowhere.lycos.com ). Now, to find the email address, type the name of the person in the name field.Once you click the Go Get button, the result will be displayed on your computer's screen. You will also find that on-screen display servers as a link, wherefrom, you can get the person's email address. 

5. SHOPPING ONLINE

Some department stores offer their products;both new and old to Internet users to payment, which is usually made in advance through a credit card. While in the case of software, developers often post the software they have written - a process similar to posting a message. You can also download and use these programs free of cost and give a feedback to the programmer about its usefulness.


6. ENTERTAINMENT 

Internet now gives you unlimited opportunities to watch latest films, TV programs and listen to music. You can download your favourite movies and music from different sources. 

7. EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES  

Suppose you wish to study in America after passing the Senior Secondary examination. Just surf the Web and you will find that almost every University in the U.S. maintains a website. Each of these sites provides extensive information, ranging from courses available to credit prices, course fees, etc., details of programs leading to various degrees and career planning services. 

8. CHAT

Chat is real-time communication between two users or more users via computer. It is one of popular services of Internet. Chatting is similar to a telephone conversation except its text. In chatting you type a message on your computer screen, which is immediately received by the receiver, and then the receiver can type a message in response to your message, which is received by you immediately. When you chat with someone over a network, you use the computer, Internet modem, Web camera, and microphone. Chats can be ongoing or scheduled for a particular time and duration. Chatting is different from email. In chatting the messages are synchronous or being sent the same time remember email is sent and stored on a mail server to be read by the recipient at a later time which could be a minute, hour, day or even a week or more. If you want to chat,you need to log on chatting software like Yahoo messenger, Rediff Bol etc. that usually splits your screen into two (one for you and the other for whoever you are chatting with). Suppose you want some information urgent and you know that your friend is online on his/her computer. You can invite him for online chat with you to get help. Remember if you ask someone a question in email you may know not get your answer in time. At least in chat - id from Gmail, Yahoo , Rediff or Indiatimes website, if you have an email account. 

Type of Chat 

  1. INSTANT MESSAGING 
Instant messaging (IM) is one of the fastest growing forms of Internet communication. It is text based communication usually occur between two people who know each other. It can also occur between a group of people. IM has become so popular because of its real - time nature. In email, you will wait for the receiver to check his/her email and send a reply. Instead in instant messaging if a user you want to reach is online and available in your IM contact list, your message appears immediately in a window on his screen. 

2.  ICQ ("I SEEK YOU")

ICQ is a useful chatting program via ICQ software. ICQ allows user to chat, send file, URLs, etc. to anyone else user can download ICQ which is assigned an ICQ number. ICQ is a free software. Two or more than two users using ICQ can have same nickname but not the same ICQ number.

3.  INTERNET RELAY CHAT (IRC)

It is a multi - user chat system. If you want to connect and communicate with the other IRC users, you must either have an IRC client or a web interface that connect you to IRC servers.
When you connect with an IRC server, there are thousands of chat groups on any topic to chat with different people. 

4.  PUBLIC AND PRIVATE CHAT

Private chat occurs between two users who know each other and are invited to participate in chat.
Public chat occurs between two users or more than two users (not necessarily know to each other) in a public area called chat room, which are registered with the chat service.



SOCIAL NETWORKING 

Social networking sites provide a platform to people to stay in touch with their friends. You can create personal web pages on social pages on social networking sites. It allow people with similar interests to come together and share information, photos and videos. You could develop an online friendship with someone in India or across the globe.  The social networking websites are known as social sites, e.g., Facebook,Twitter and Google+ etc..

FACEBOOK

Facebook is an American online social media and social media networking service. Facebook was launched on 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, along with Edward Severin. It is easy to connect as well as share your information with your family,friends and business associates online. Facebook is the most popular social networking website that allows to make new connections with those who share a common interest. 

TWITTER

Twitter is online news and social networking site where user can post and interact with messages is known as Twitter. Twitter was created in March 2006 and launched in July 2006.
